Description:
Support JDK 25 LTS (currently in final release candidate phase).
Justification:
Allow users to try the new LTS ahead of release (for example the removed security manager could break applications).
Are you willing to submit a PR?
Maybe, but 49 open issues and 39 open pull requests don't inspire confidence that all of my work would be allowed to benefit users in a timely fashion...
Wow, thank you for your time! It does work. Seems that error message need to be updated to clarify that it is not available for the 'oracle' distro, not in general.
I can't say why setup-java handles input versioning totally different between distributions, but that is another story.
For example distribution: corretto allows java-version: 25 which is successfully resolved to the real version 25.0.0+36.2, whereas the temurin code above requires the full semver 25.0.0+36.0.LTS 🤷
Long story short, setup-java supports 25-ea and ga as long as the distribution provides the required architecture and OS, otherwise you can't even know that other 25 binaries already exist, the action only logs older versions in that case.
What I wanted to request is the ability from a user's perspective to use the latest JDK 25, ea or ga if available, to allow the community to help testing the next LTS release before it's finalized and bugfixes would have to be postponed to the first patch release on the JDK side, and userland bugfixes until after the JDK has been released.
Otherwise better error messages like distribution temurin provides JDK 25 but only as prerelease 25-ea or 25.0.0+36.0.LTS but not for your OS ubuntu-24.04 and architecture x64 yet would be appreciated.
And a table of what actually is available would be super helpful in such a case, listing distributions and version numbers so users could choose to switch to a prerelease or another distribution while they are waiting for their preferred distribution binaries.

Hello @reneleonhardt,
Thank you for creating this feature request. We will investigate it and get back to you as soon as we have some feedback.

Actually, you can already use Java 25 as long as the vendor (distribution) provides it.
Here is a working example:

Thank you for sharing one working distribution!
An equivalent example for Python would be:

Hello there! Just a quick question. When is the release for JDK 25 will be officially released?
reneleonhardt commentedon Sep 21, 2025
Hello João! What release do you mean exactly? 😄
OpenJDK 25 has been released on Tuesday.
https://openjdk.org/projects/jdk/25/
Do you mean a specific distribution like Temurin?
They released some binaries on Wednesday, but it takes a long time until all builds are finalized, that means getting exactly the binary you need is another story.
https://adoptium.net/temurin/releases?version=25&mode=filter&os=any&arch=any
https://github.com/adoptium/temurin25-binaries/releases/tag/jdk-25%2B36
There is no x64 build for ubuntu-latest yet, so setup-java@main is not even listing any 25 releases.
setup-java uses their API, here is a more lenient example, you can see very few x64 binaries are available:
https://api.adoptopenjdk.net/v3/assets/version/%5B24.0.2,25.0.1%5D?project=jdk&vendor=adoptopenjdk&heap_size=normal&sort_method=DEFAULT&sort_order=DESC&jvm_impl=hotspot&release_type=ga
Temurin 25 build progress:
